The Temple of Vesta

Rome's cult of Vesta illustrates how sacred space, priestly office and civic continuity could be joined.

Why this evidence matters

The Vestal priestesses were associated with the maintenance of the public hearth. Their office belonged to the religious institutions of the Roman state rather than merely household custom.

What it cannot prove

Surviving buildings, literary accounts and inscriptions reflect different phases of Roman history. Modern impressions of an unchanged eternal flame should be checked against those chronological differences.
