The Sanctuary at Delphi

Delphi illustrates the institutional and geographical importance of a sanctuary in Greek religion.

Why this evidence matters

Consultation of Apollo's oracle is widely attested in ancient writing. The sanctuary also hosted dedications, monuments and gatherings that tied local ritual to the wider Greek world.

What it cannot prove

Reported oracular answers may have been reshaped by later literary authors. Archaeological evidence of the sanctuary is not identical to evidence that any particular reported prediction occurred exactly as told.
