The Piacenza Liver

The Piacenza bronze liver is divided into labeled regions, providing rare material evidence of Etruscan divinatory classification.

Why this evidence matters

As a model of an organ, the object connects bodily observation to a mapped system of divine names. Its inscriptions are particularly important because few Etruscan religious documents survive.

What it cannot prove

The model does not preserve a handbook explaining each stage of the ritual. Roman descriptions of haruspicy can assist interpretation but should not be treated as a complete translation of this artifact.
