Darius and Royal Inscriptions

Achaemenid royal inscriptions offer direct evidence of the ways Persian kings invoked Ahura Mazda.

Why this evidence matters

These texts connect divine support to kingship and political legitimacy. They can be compared with monuments and wider Iranian religious traditions, but their immediate purpose was royal representation.

What it cannot prove

Neither a royal inscription nor the later Avesta can stand alone as a census of belief throughout the empire. Scholarly debates about chronology and continuity remain significant.
