Cuneiform Hymns and Divine Names

Cuneiform texts preserve changing relationships among divine names, cities and religious traditions.

Why this evidence matters

Different scribal languages allowed figures such as Inanna and Ishtar to be linked across compositions. Hymns give insight into worship and poetic characterization, while lists and records serve other purposes.

What it cannot prove

Translations may mask distinctions between periods and genres. The survival of a tablet in a library does not establish that its claims applied uniformly to every settlement.
