Questions and answers
When were Norse myths recorded?
Many of the best-known stories survive in medieval Icelandic manuscripts written after the region’s conversion to Christianity. They may preserve older traditions, but they are not direct recordings from every Viking-Age community.
What is the difference between the two Eddas?
The Poetic Edda is a collection of poems preserved in manuscripts; the Prose Edda, associated with Snorri Sturluson, organizes mythic knowledge in a prose framework. Their literary purposes and dates matter when assessing specific claims.
Can archaeological finds test the stories?
Runic texts, images, burial objects and amulets provide independent evidence of names and symbols. Thor’s hammer pendants demonstrate material use of an emblem without telling us the exact beliefs of every wearer.
Was belief consistent across Scandinavia?
Practices changed by region and time. A careful account distinguishes written narrative, place-name evidence, archaeology and modern reconstruction instead of presenting an unchanging Norse canon.
